Equidistant between the villages of Widecombe-in-the-Moor and Manaton, Swallerton Gate is situated at a fork in the road within the shadow of mighty Hound Tor. The house was once upon a time known as the Hound Tor Inn and is thought to have been a small cider house for passing wool traders during the 18th and 19th centuries. Now a private residence, it is often described as a 'chocolate box' thatched cottage with immediate access to some of Dartmoor's most striking landmarks. Bowerman's Nose, Becky Falls, Hay Tor and Grimspound are all within reasonable walking distance of the house, and a short journey in the car (or on a bicycle) will open up a plethora of other wonders this wilderness has to offer.
